not xoma related.

This is an update to the special alert you received last week on the e-mail security issue. Updated versions of the security patches for Outlook 98 and Outlook Express 4.x are now available. We highly recommend that you download the appropriate updated patch - even if you recently downloaded the original patch. Outlook 98 users can download the patch from Office Update at microsoft.com. Outlook Express users can download the patch from microsoft.com.

Since issuing the initial fixes on July 27th Microsoft has continued to review and analyze the original reported vulnerability in an effort to provide its customers with the highest level of security and service. The updated patches posted on August 11th fix the vulnerability reported to us by OUSPG and also address a variant of the original vulnerability found during continued testing. The updated patches address all known issues related to the recently reported e-mail security vulnerability. Information on the updated patches can be found at microsoft.com.

Although no customers have reported being affected by the e-mail security issue, Microsoft takes this issue very seriously and is committed to ensuring that all of its customers enjoy a safe and secure computing experience. Our developers and testers have worked around the clock to analyze and test variations of the long filename issue reported by OUSPG, which affects attachments with maliciously generated long filenames.

Note: It has come to Microsoft's attention that someone is e-mailing users an attachment that claims to be the patch for these issues. This file is not valid and should not be installed. You should obtain the official patches by downloading them from the appropriate web sites listed, or through some other trusted mechanism, such as an Internet Service Provider. While Microsoft has been sending e-mail notifications to you as an alert to this issue and the availability of a patch, Microsoft does not send patches via e-mail. If you receive an e-mail with an attachment that claims to be a patch, you should not install it.

We thank you in advance for you patience as we work to provide you with the latest information and patches. We recommend that you continue to visit microsoft.com for the latest information and updates on security issues, and subscribe to the Microsoft Security Bulletin Notification Service.

Thank you.
