If you have a 17 inch monitor you need at least 4MB of VRAM. Screen resolution and color depth (# of colors on screen - need at least 65,000 for decent images from the web, for example) are dependent on video memory. With 2MB you will get 800X600 and 65k colors. Fine for a 15 inch screen but with 17 really need 1024 X 768. You can only get 256 colors at that resolution with 2MB. CPQ always skip on these things. They used to ship with asychronous L2 cache which was only marginally faster than no cache at all (don't know if they still do - I would doubt it as all the mags found them out). DELL and GTW always had synchronous burst L2 for 30% improvement in Ziff Davis tests versus no cache. Also CPQ's first foray into sub 1000 had 24MB RAM but that was shared with the video card. Little things like this mean that you don't get the right equipment. Sure, few ppl need 3D, or the superior Floating Point Unit of all Pentiums and PII's versus AMD and Cyrix, but the inferior L2 cache, sharing of main RAM with video RAM, and insufficient video RAM do make a noticeable difference to the average user. Be very careful when buying a CPQ as this is what they do to cut costs!
