Iraq Rebukes US on Threat of Force

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - Iraq rebuked the United States on Saturday for threatening to use force over the issue of weapons inspectors, saying America was not the world's policeman.

The spokesman accused the United States of using ''the law of the jungle in dealing with one of the founder members of the United Nations,'' the official Iraqi News Agency reported.

''If the crisis is between Iraq and the United Nations, who authorized the U.S. government to threaten to attack the Iraqi people? Who appointed the American government as an international police force?'' asked a spokesman for the Information and Culture Ministry.

On Friday, U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright told Iraq's government to resume full cooperation with U.N. weapons inspectors because ''there will be no sanctions relief if we can't have inspections going on.''

Iraq suspended cooperation Aug. 5 after the chief U.N. inspector, Richard Butler, said he could not certify that Iraq had eliminated all its weapons of mass destruction, as required for the lifting of the sanctions imposed after Baghdad's forces invaded Kuwait in 1990.

''Let me ... make clear,'' Albright said, ''if necessary we will use force on our timetable in response to threats, and at a time and place of our choosing.''

The Iraqi spokesman said the U.S. threats were ''futile.''
