Duncan, I read Levinson's essay, "The Embarrassing Second Amendment", and found nothing in it convincing in any way. What exactly is your point?

Isn't America a republic? Reputable polls show that a majority of Americans favor some regulations on guns. Is there some reason the NRA should subvert the majority opinion?

And what about the Second Amendment, anyway? I think it is embarrassing because it is so specific to the historical period in which it was written. I am sure the writers of the Constitution could not really imagine assault rifles that even a a child would be able to operate to mow down all of his classmates. Certainly, there is absolutely nothing in its writing to indicate anything beyond the concept that organized militia units should be armed to prevent foreign powers from threatening our freedoms. It is an anachronism, in any event, and should be discarded.
