Hello Peter

I am sorry but I do not share your optimism. Greed and power! Too many have too much to lose if UNITA disarms. I have no faith in the UN doing anything military in a jungle environment. If there is any "wet work" look to see a third party financed by a third party become proactive. Hit squads, assassins, guerilla and surgical strikes by organizations like Executive Outcomes and Air America equivalents.

I think it is going to get a lot hotter and dirtier before it gets better. Its entirely possible that a rough stalemate will settle in, with the exception of a few well armed corporate diamond operations, the interior will probably go to UNITA and the coast to the government. UNITA gets most of the diamonds and the government gets most of the oil.

Individual pipes can be fenced and protected more easily than alluvial operations so Diamond Works, SUF, DeBeers and a few others may manage to put their pipes into production within an armed camp environment. Locals will want the safety of the camp and the work so isolated mini corporate enclaves will probably dot the Luanda Norte province.

Tactically, wait for your enemy to relax his guard then send in a surgical strike and... what's the term...Terminate With Extreme Prejudice. DeBeers can not like all this smuggling, and Angola would appear to be the world's largest source right now, so they have a reason for seeing it stop.

Follow the money...

Regards
