Glenn, Thanks for all the great work you have contributed to the thread over the past several weeks - You help to make the thread one of the most informative and enjoyable ones on the net!

--------

This post tells us what I have long suspected - that Amazon.com, rather than being the technical powerhouse that some have imagined, has been forced to acquire companies to meet competitive threats that it could well have prepared itself for. Why didn't Amazon.com develop their own e-mail and directory services to provide similar services to PlanetAll? If their vision for the internet was so outstanding as some analysts and many other proponents have said, why didn't they see the impact of Web Shop Bots long before the threat loomed so obviously? Rather than perceive these developments early on, Amazon.com has taken action only after the need is obvious, every major portal and many minor ones already have similar capabilities, and the price for the good companies has escalated enormously.

Instead of getting these companies for a few million as others have done, Amazon.con has spent over $280 million in stock (I guess that's worth at least a few million of real money). Most of the value of these companies is yet to be proven. As the 10Q points out, they are losing money (join the club) and Amazon will have to take a large write-off for intangibles that are worthless.
