Regarding fancy new xDSL technologies not working in rural areas...yep, that's true. You generally need to be fairly close to a central switching station (urban centre). An early rollout by Sasktel in Canada however offered this fast service to something like 80% of the population and this is a rural area (just so happens though that a lot of people live close enough to either Saskatoon or Regina to get service). And they claim up to 95% of the population will eventually have access. In rural areas xDSL deployment WILL be slower but since there will be money in it for local phone companies I assume upgraded service will come eventually. In the interim I suppose some kind of expensive satellite service will be the answer...or slow dialup access.
