Gates pinpoints decision to combine OS, browser zdnet.com

The two Bills seemed to be neck and neck in previewing their upcoming testimony this weekend, though the greater Bill's had been previously telegraphed. The lead in from www.zdnn.com was titled "Gates: pre-deposition PR blitz", so standard Microsoft business practice, legal division, seems to be following its usual course. The line here is that obscure Allard guy's retreat, you know, the secret 2nd in command, turned the whole company around April 5, 1994. An improvement over the backward creeping 1992 date, but somewhat at variance with previous PR lines. So many lines to choose from, no wonder it's all beyond the comprehension of mere mortals.

In an interview with The Seattle Times published Sunday,
Gates said the decision was made at an April 5, 1994, executive
retreat.

''I said, hey, we're going to get it (the browser) integrated
into the operating system,'' Gates told the newspaper.

The next day Gates announced publicly that the company's
forthcoming Windows 95 operating system would include Internet
technologies.

Tell it to the judge, Bill. Make sure "junior executives" Allchin and Maritz get their stories and dates straight too. Oh, I forget, they were only talking for the marketing side, we all know Microsoft is technology driven. While you're at it, tell is when Windows will integrate the forthcoming "sucks less" technologies. Rumors of integration in Windows 98 seem to have been greatly exaggerated, and I hear that's the end of the Windows line.

Cheers, Dan.
