i think i disagree. It is possible to be long and short a stock in the same account. Its called a boxed hedge, or something similar.
if the positions are the exact same size your broker will probably only need about 10% of the value to maintain the position.

In regards to selling 1000 shares while being long only 500.....that would be a violation and would not be allowed. He could however be long 500, and short 1000.

you can ask Steve, i'm pretty sure that he will agree.
