Sword, yes, I have personally done both; long to short, and short to long in a single trade. In going from long to short on a downtick, Datek's system will immediately sell the shares to net 0, and then sell the remaining shares at the next uptick, hence a split transaction (partial fills), but only 1 commission. gbh
