Who said the RAID market is shrinking? EMC's stock price history, see chart, is almost entirely due to RAID.

RAID is clearly one of THE best products to have been, and be, in. SCSI is also not shrinking, at least not at the workstation and server levels. It most likely has at the PC level because of the sudden popularity of the sub $1,000 PC. If something has to go to get under a K, why not SCSI. IDE works just fine. Adaptec probably had a lot more exposure to the PC, vs. bigger system market.
I don't think there is any question that Adaptec is the kind of company that's going to have difficulty setting it's own strategy and destiny. The kind of storage to be used, and its interface will be set by forces on either side of where Adaptec sits. Adaptec has to then..., well, adapt. Then, when they gain their niche, the price thing, or something else could blindside them from nowhere again. Of course, no one is safe from being blindsided, including IBM and Intel.
