Dream Weaver: I understand from a Chinese friend that the market
in Hong Kong will be closed Monday 17 August 1998 for holiday.
The same source confirmed that the HK government, indeed, as you
indicated, interceded in the stock market in order to foil the short
sellers. Thus, this information certainly goes a long to explain why
the market leaped nearly 8.5% on Friday last, 14 August. For what
it's worth, the selfsame source did not express confidence that the
Hang Seng index will do anything but decline when the HK market
re-opens Tuesday.
