T: OFF TOPIC

Mr. Bowties' deserves little credit for his negative opinion about Russia for several reasons. He should have been negative on Asia first and foremost, as negative developements became evident first in Asia and in fact was a trigger, if not the cause, of loss of investor confidence in virtually all developing countries including Russia. Mr. Bowties on numerous occassions has stated that the best time to invest in a developing country is when the country is in shambles, and apparently has done so in such countries as Venezuela; but he does not explain why he does not apply this principle to Russia; for long periods he refused to discuss developments there when he was guest commentator on CNBC. Not that he would have enlightened us much; his discussion seldom gets more sophisticated than what you would here in Econ. 101(he does teach a course in economics).

Besides missing the disaster in Asia, he is still warning us of the inevitability of disastrous inflation in the US and world wide, based on rising wage demands. On CNBC last Friday this view was challenged by another commentator who politely pointed out that increased wages don't automatically lead to inflation when productivity is also increasing. Typical of Mr. Bowtie's acumen was his long standing assertion that interest rates would never fall below 6% ; well, look where they are now folks. No wonder that BB refers to him as Mr. Bowtie.

He is one of the least useful commentators that CNBC has and he's on most Fridays on Squawk Box. If you want to get a bigger picture of his investment advice, you can look up a long list of his investment ideas in Barron's Roundtable annual discussion published at the beginning of the year. See how many of them you consider useful or practicable or even assessable for the small investor and please let me know if you find even one. Best of luck.

David
