Market makers typically have four letter "call symbols"...ie MLCO, Merril Lynch, GSCO goldman sachs, PWJC painne webber, etc.
That they are listed in the stock means they make markets, but it does not mean theymight not have clients who want to sell/buy it. That is they can be a market maker AND have clients that are buying selling..infact, thats exactly what they want, to be positioned in a stock as a market maker and to be receiving client order flow. That is what making a market is about, taking a principal's position in the transaction...into their inventory from one client, out to another, like any retail business with inventory.
