Agreed on both counts...and you know what? One of the reasons that Ruth's 1921 Slugging Average is so difficult to beat is the same reason that Young's career wins won't be beat. Today's players aren't facing pitchers who have started and completed games at the rate of 75 games a year or have hung around the leagues for 500+ wins.

Most importantly, and somebody ought to do a study to verify this, the biggest difference in the offensive performance between today's players and those of the first half of the century is this, IMHO,:

The quality of the pitching in innings 7,8,9 and beyond.

Did the Babe or Lou ever consistently have to bat against a fresh pitcher of the quality of an Eckersley or Queez or Marshall in the late innings? and how strong were the pitchers that the old timers faced come August and September, after all those starts?

A study should be commissioned.
