"Starwave To Team With ABC"

By Steven Vonder Haar
1:30 PM EST

"Starwave Corp. plans to team with ABC News to launch a Web site during
the first quarter of 1997 that would compete with online offerings from
CNN; and NBC's and Microsoft Corp.'s MSNBC joint venture, industry
executives said Thursday."

"The alliance tightens the bond between Starwave and The Walt Disney Co.,
which own both ABC and a majority stake in ESPN, the cable channel
brand name behind Starwave's highly successful ESPNET SportsZone site."

"Starwave is in negotiations with ABC, ESPN and an unnamed financial
services company to offer branded content via an offline service that
Starwave expects to launch during the first quarter of 1997."

"The advertiser-supported service would push data to users' desktops,
delivering a blend of text, graphics and video clips to personal computers in
competition with existing broadcast data networks, such as PointCast Inc.
The service, internally called Starwave TV, would be free to users."

"For us, this in an interim step to the broadband era," said Patrick
Naughton, Starwave's vice president of technology. "This solves how we
can deliver broadband-style services in a seamless way."

"Starwave officials said they are seeking content partnerships to launch both
a news-oriented and a financial services Web site early next year. The
additions would give Starwave content coverage in the four major editorial
areas of news, sports, entertainment and financial services. "It's a virtual
online service," Naughton said."
