Trans Capital launches first removable drive
By Zarinah Daud
SEBERANG PRAI: Electronics contract manufacturer Trans Capital Holding Bhd yesterday launched Malaysia's first 2.2GB removable drive known as ORB.

Its chief executive officer Tan Say Choon said the company was the first Malaysian-owned manufacturer to produce a complete removable cartridge disk drive.

''The 2.2GB capacity is as fast as a hard drive and removable like a DVD player. We are confident that the product will be used extensively," he said, adding that the company had invested US$10mil in the project.

''We are not only building a fantastic drive with higher capacity, performance and reliability, but also bringing the cost of removable storage to a record low."

The ORB which uses new magneto-resistive (MR) head technology for universal storage, was designed and developed by US-based Castlewood System Inc and manufactured by Trans Capital which is its first offshore partner.

Trans Capital holds about 5% share in Castlewood with an option to increase it by another 5%.

Tan said volume of production would start with 5,000 drives, reaching the 120,000 maximum capacity by year-end.

''With its ultra-high performance at an attractive price, we are optimistic that ORB will be extensively used.

''We have also anticipated that Trans Capital will join the One Billion Ringgit Company by the year 2000," he added.

Castlewood president/CEO Syed Iftikar said the ORB was aimed at PCs, VCRs and set-top boxes.

The company anticipated demands of over 10 million and Castlewood was now negotiating with another Malaysian company to manufacture the product.
