Well, we were both right! I called MBT and they said that in a normal retail account you can create a boxed hedge without opening a separate account, but on a daytrading account you can't. The SEC makes that distinction in their rules.

Therefore the trade that you initiated at Datek was legal and the rules governing my daytrading account at MBT prevent me from doing what you did.
