Software / Hardware Warranty

I agree this is a significant issue. I took my Compaq computer to Fry's ( authorized Compaq Service Center ). They made me sign something that indicated I would have to pay a fee (forget how much but it was significant) if they determined that the problem was software related.

Additional warranty comments

A Fry's employee told me that the case had been opened so the warranty was void. I told him that I was instructed to do so by a Compaq service rep ( to reseat plugs). He argued with me and told me Compaq's warranty did not allow that. He said I could not install any expansion card without voiding the warranty. He said sometimes they make exceptions for RAM.

I called Compaq on another issue. The first thing the Compaq service rep told me to do was remove all non Compaq installed components.

I recall a similar situation posted on this thread regarding Micron support and third party components.

I tried to buy a DELL Win95 machine with an Appian dual monitor card. They refused indicating that they would only support Appian cards in NT.

A question for the thread (unless we have beat this one to death a la Spot's comment)

Are the DELL/Gateway/third party warranties affected if one modifies the original hardware/software configuration? Does one have to restore an original configuration before asking for warranty support?
