Re: Hardware Warranty on Upgraded Machine - One Experience

Zeuspaul,

On one of my gateway machines, I had, since purchasing the machine

1. Replaced the Pentium Processor with an OverDrive
2. Replaced all Simms
3. Replaced the original primary hard drive and added a second
4. Upgraded the OS from WFW 3.11 to Win 95
5. Add NIC and parallel ISA cards

None of this was done using Gateway (Needless to say, I eventually built another machine with all the removed parts)

When the machine developed a problem (wouldn't boot even after Win 95 was reinstalled on re-formatted HD) and was well into the third year of warranty. I called for service. The first thing discussed was every addition to the machine (only then, in fact, did it dawn on me how little of the original machine was left) But without comment, Gateway then helped me resolve the problem over the course of several sessions, (the machine needed a bios upgrade available on Gateway's site). Of course, there was no on-site service involved. In fact, because Gateway offers life-time phone support, no parts were needed so the warranty was never even invoked.

Regards,
Michael

I called Compaq on another issue. The first thing the Compaq service rep told me to do was remove all non Compaq installed components.

Yeucchh. Sounds like they've been hanging out with DEC support too long already.
