General Motors has had tracking stocks for some years to track the EDS subsidiary (GM E) before it was spun back off. And Hughes Electronics (GM H). Tracking stocks were announced as part of the original deal. It gives investors a way to get a more pure play in the subs business if that's what they are after.

Ultimately, I suppose this is a sop to the TCI investors who just want to be in the flashy high tech communications part of the business and not stodgy old ma bell.
