Gemstone Systems, Inc. Files For Initial Public Offering

Beaverton, OR -- July 23, 1998 - GemStone Systems, Inc. announced today that it has filed a Registration Statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission for the proposed initial public offering of 2,500,000 shares of Common Stock of the Company. Of the Shares being offered, 500,000 are being sold by a corporate stockholder. GemStone intends to use the proceeds of the offering primarily for research and product development and for expansion of general sales and customer support activities.

GemStone intends to apply for listing of the Common Stock on the Nasdaq National Market System. The offering will be managed by SG Cowen Securities Corporation, Piper Jaffray Inc. and Volpe Brown Whelan & Company as representatives of the Underwriters.

GemStone designs, develops, markets and supports enterprise application software platforms that support the development, deployment and management of distributed, business-critical core competency applications in heterogeneous environments. The company's GemStone/J product is an application server for a new generation of enterprise server-based applications written in Java.

A Registration Statement relating to these securities has been filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission but has not yet become effective. Although GemStone stepped back from developing a genuine ODBMS, their public exposure will give us more data to crunch, increasing the overall visibility of OO-technologies... I think GemStone is making about $30M in annual revenues.
