I follow this area but have about decided to stay out of it. Not Aware's fault, but RBOC's have screwed the pooch. With a heavy customer preference in their favor, due to their much superior customer service reputation over the cable co's, they have waited too long and are going to deliver too little too late.

If they had ASDL lite available for residential customers NOW, they'd be selling it and keeping the customer base. But the cable co's, with a superior product, are beating them to the market. Nobody's going to uninstall a 5MB or better system for a 1.5MB system, and most people are going to wait a few months for the better bandwidth available on cable. If the BB's could beat cable by six months or a year, they'd be in good shape.

First ISDN. Now we have BB execs slowing ASDL deployment because they don't want to "cannibalize" their T-1 business. Well, wake up and smell the coffee, BellSouth. When cable gets around to installing two-way fiber to businesses, the guys in charge are going to have cable at home and switch to it at work. T-1 has a year or two left and it will be dead. And you'll have nothing.

So as much as I hate cable, it looks like it might well prevail just because it hasn't been sitting around wondering what to do.
