You lived with *two* Danish women? I'd say lucky dog if I were certain Renby is a male name. I'm sure Qualcomm is vastly more competitive than Motorola and anyway you cut it... but the coming standard convergence issues might make the Nordics quite strong competitors.

Apparently the satellite phone scenario isn't quite as rosy as it was a short time ago... both Iridium and Globalstar are facing increasing skepticism on Wall Street. The reason is pretty clear: when Ericsson debuts its worldphone this puppy will weigh under 140 grams and undercut the satellite phones steeply in price (Of course Iridium is much less competitive to start with). Since it functions in all kinds of TDMA, GSM and AMPS flavors it can be used in most of the world's cities - and this is what the executives are after, a small, affordable *urban* worldphone. I doubt many are willing to put up with extra weight, price and other hassle to get a satellite phone that guarantees a connection in Gobi Desert. The USA/Europe GSM phone by Bosch is already a solid niche hit.

I'm sure Nokia's entry won't be any weaker, so the satellite phones face quite strong land-based worldphone competition from Ericsson and Nokia by late -99. Nokia and Ericsson are the kind of global brands that can be expected to break through the worldphone concept in all major markets simultaneously. I'm interested to see how well Qualcomm can extend its sales beyond USA... it's virtually unknown here among the mongol hordes outside the US.

May your feast table never lack horse meat and curdled milk,
Tero
