Hi Mark (from Bob),

In Psalm 82 the word god is singled out to indicate a position. This is evidenced not only in the context but also via the word itself being singled out. The judges were messengers of God to rule over the people (see OT). In John 10 Jesus clarified this position in verse 35 - "If he called them 'gods', to whom the word of God came - "

Again notice that the word itself is singled out by the punctuation, the statement also singles out a specific group of people who this peculiar title was assigned. My personal belief is that this title is used by God both in the Old and New Testament as a mocking title illustrating how these people felt and acted - like "gods". It was not unusual in the ancient world for a ruler to be thought of or called god or to even think of himself as god. As a matter of fact it still happens in this century - remember Hirohito.

I believe that God found this laughable then and also finds it laughable now. The New Age philosophy of us all being a part of God does the same thing that these people in our discussion does - that is to rob God of His Divine glory by minimizing it.

Speak with you soon.

Bob
