Well it's what's behind the paintings. The paintings are stories of the hunt. For instance a broken spear as oog tries the buffalo indicates that oog is not a good hunter. Oog is a bozo. Invocations of the deity are apparent in some depictions from early halstatt culture (Museum at KDE). But dependent societies passed when their sources dried up or abandoned that migration route. When man began to harvest and cultivate his own resources as tenuous as that process was it reaped rewards of permanancy. The problem then was waste.
