LL - I don't think I mentioned polls - only public opinion in the sense that legislators count the effect on their votes and chances for re-election. Votes are the currency of politics. Also the rulings against Clinton have in the opinion of many badly weakened the Presidency. The Republicans don't want to see this trend continue, after all they like to have one of their own as President too! So we have a delicate balance here of which the Republicans are as aware as the Democrats of the extreme danger for the institution of a dragged out impeachment process. The only reason I can see for Clinton stepping down is if there is a knock on the door from senior Democrats saying he should resign. In this case I think he will have to go - and this scenario is certainly possible - otherwise I think he will tough it out, damaged though he may be. E
