Charles, I am not a broker and have only just found a trick that lets me get free real time quotes ovet the web, but that shows me only last trade price, and best bid and ask. From what I understand, traders with 'level 2"access can see bid and ask prices for each individual market maker. They can see if its one mm with a large inventory of shares etc. From those who looked at this last week it was apparent that there was a single seller of a large number of shares (several 100K or more) and that he/she was very determined to get out at whatever the market would allow. Once these shares dried up on Thursday, value traders (like you) took over and most of the subsequent action was at the ask price (which ratcheted up quickly, trade to trade. Don't know why Mr./Mrs X was dumping. Could have been taxes. But there does't seem to have been any connection to business fundamentals.
