Kabila Meets Angolan, Namibian Leaders at Luanda Summit

The presidents of Angola, Namibia and the Democratic Republic of Congo held a tripartite summit meeting in the city of Luanda today. Presidents Sam Nujoma and Laurent Kabila were in the Angolan capital for a few hours to discuss the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The summit meeting decided, among other things, to hold a meeting of defense ministers from Angola, Namibia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zimbabwe. Journalist Manuel da Conceicao has further details:

No statement was issued at the end of the meeting, which took place at the Futungo de Belas Palace. A press communiqu‚ revealed the meeting was designed to examine the difficult situation facing the Democratic Republic of Congo. According to the communiqu‚, the heads of state expressed their concern over the intensity of military actions in that country, jeopardizing the stability of the southern African region. Thus, they recommended the holding of a meeting of defense ministers from Angola, Zimbabwe, Namibia and the Democratic Republic of Congo in Harare tomorrow. Laurent Kabila and Sam Nujoma returned to their countries late this afternoon.

Russia Defense Minister Meets with Angolan Counterpart

Russia's Defense Minister Igor Sergeyev arrived in Luanda yesterday for a three-day visit aimed to deepen bilateral relations. Minister Sergeyev was accompanied by a delegation of government officials and businessmen from the oil, diamond and fisheries sectors. The Ministers of Energy, Natural Resources and Fisheries will hold meetings with their Angolan counterparts and sign cooperation agreements

Minister Igor Sergeyev met with his Angolan counterpart, Pedro Sebastiao, yesterday to discuss military cooperation and Russia's contribution to the training of specialists in the Angolan army. Russia currently trains Angolan military under the terms of a mutual agreement renewed by Angolan President dos Santos during a visit to Moscow in June.
