MS was not a consideration in choosing the 8088 over other processors.

If I remember correctly, IBM asked MicroSoft for a BASIC interpreter and an OS. Gates told them they couldn't do an OS and suggested Digital Research. Digital Research refused because of the various trade secret agreements they would have to sign and IBM went back to Gates who agreed to do it. MicroSoft then purchased the toy OS that they turned into PC-DOS 1.0 (another toy OS).

MicroSoft grew into today's Microsoft because Digital Research dropped the ball. Now Digital Research is suing Microsoft saying that Microsoft intentionally wrote Win95 and Win98 so that DR-DOS can't be used under the GUI.
