DSC Unveils New GSM Services For Expanding Wireless Industry
PR Newswire, Monday, August 17, 1998 at 11:10
DALLAS, Aug. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- DSC Communications Corporation (NASDAQ:DIGI) announced today the introduction of three new GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) services, based on DSC's INfusion(TM) intelligent network product line. To provide today's wireless carriers with network-distinguishing, enhanced features, DSC is launching its Private Dialing Plan, Incoming and Outgoing Call Screening, and Wireless Prepaid services. DSC will display these services for the first time Sept. 23-25 at the PCS '98 trade show in Orlando (booth #413). "The point of differentiation in today's wireless market clearly lies in services," said Bruce Hill, vice president, DSC's IN Division. "By providing the most advanced offerings, carriers are well positioned to retain current subscribers and attract new ones. Our IN platforms along with the new GSM services are designed to do just that: provide a flexible, evolutionary path for the network to follow and roll out new services quickly."
Private Dialing Plan (PDP) This offering gives subscribers the ability to develop private network capabilities while using public network resources. A wireless form of Virtual Private Network (VPN), the PDP service allows customers to create internal dialing sequences that are different from those used in the public numbering plan. Similar to the wireline feature seen in businesses or government offices today, this networking feature allows subscribers to set up abbreviated dialing preferences. These could vary from one to nine digits in length (excluding the seven-digit format used by the public network). Available for both the GSM and ANSI 41C markets, PDP allows customers access to distinctive dialing patterns through subscriptions to PDP User Groups. Because the GSM standards are somewhat ahead of the WIN standards, there are some functions of PDP that are currently exclusive to the GSM market. These include: geographic-based routing, information services and universal number services.
Incoming and Outgoing Call Screening With DSC's INfusion Call Screening Services, available for ANSI 41C and now GSM markets, carriers can give their customers the flexibility to decide how their calls -- both incoming and outgoing -- will be screened. Subscribers can define their own screening lists to either accept or reject certain calls, based on pre-set phone numbers, country codes, area codes or local exchanges. Subscribers have the option to route accepted calls to their voice mail service. They can also use the service's distinctive alerting option, which gives a distinct ring for any incoming calls from restricted numbers. For outgoing call screening, subscribers can choose to block calls going out at certain times of day or to specified numbers.
Wireless Prepaid To control their wireless costs while enjoying access to a full variety of features, subscribers can choose DSC's INfusion Wireless Prepaid Service for GSM networks. With this option, customers purchase their wireless service in advance, establishing a pre-set dollar limit. Wireless Prepaid Service can also be combined with the INfusion Call Screening Services to give subscribers even greater control over their calling costs. Calls to or from restricted numbers can be blocked, thus ensuring that the subscriber pays for only those calls that are preferred.
Common Platform for Bundling Flexibility All of these new GSM services draw on the strength of DSC's proven Infusion SCP (Service Control Point), which provides the intelligence needed to deliver such advanced features. Carriers can opt to bundle all three services together in order to create new, more specialized offerings to their customers. Services can also be launched separately as selected by the wireless carrier.
