As a beer drinker, I do indeed have to agree with you: in a pub, go with what you don't know.

But at the grocery store...

Again you are right, sales and marketing and getting it on the shelves. There I believe that Sam Adams has critical mass, which can translate into mass appeal. The real growth would seem to come from getting Joe 6 Pack to switch from Bud to Sam.

Note that big brewers' (Bud, Stroh, Coors, Miller) margins have increased as boutique beers' higher shelf prices have allowed the majors to boost their prices, too.

The real question, I think, is will the beer boom continue? Or have cigars already replaced boutique beers as the new fashionable sin?
