NEW YORK, Aug 18 (Reuters) - Shares of Dell Computer Corp. jumped in post-session trade Tuesday after the leading direct distributor of personal computers reported quarterly profits that beat Wall Street's estimates.

Dell was up at 114 on the Instinet electronic trading system from a composite closing price of 109-9/16.

Round Rock, Texas-based Dell said its fiscal 1999 second- quarter net income rose 62 percent to $346 million or $0.50 a diluted share versus $214 million or $0.29 a share a year ago.

The company also set a two-for-one stock split to be paid as a 100 percent stock dividend.

Although the mean First Call forecast was $0.46, traders had said that Wall Street had been "whispering" numbers in the range of $0.51 to $0.52 a share.

The New York Stock Exchange said that after-hours session one volume was 788,900 versus 1,685,100 on Monday. Session two volume was 7,088,937 versus 1,146,245 on Monday. >
