Bill, it's my understanding that ADSL is not a type of line, rather, it is a service that only needs an ADSL "modem" if you will, at each end, i.e., your computer and the ISP (telco) switch (or computer?)

Also, here's part of BellSouth's email to me FYI:

The next step in the qualification process is to determine whether the phone line(s)
you listed meet the technical specifications necessary to support FastAccess Service.
Technical line specifications that still must be verified include the distance from
the phone company central office switch to your location and the existence of
any network devices that will prevent FastAccess Service on your phone line.
Unfortunately, not all phone lines in a neighborhood served by FastAccess
will qualify for service.

So it looks like it's a crap shoot, after all...<g>
