I respect Tom Todd's opinions; he is very knowledgeable on the programmable chip industry. I personally think it is great long term for Actel as this will get them into the SRAM FPGA market with an advanced technology so they will be in a better position to compete with Xilinx and Altera. Like Tom I would prefer they would takeover GateField and that may be their plan further down the line. Short term, the costs involved in the Gatefield agreement plus startup costs may hamper earnings for awhile. Everyone seemed impressed with GateField's technology but they just didn't have the financial strength to go it alone. I believe last Friday was a deadline for them to do something or they were going to be de-listed by NASDAQ. Hopefully the new agreement will be a positive for both companies and if things go well Actel should be in a good position to acquire the company at a later date.
