Spectrian Announces SCPA Subsystem for Wireless Local
Loop Applications

August 18, 1998

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE) via NewsEdge
Corporation -- Spectrian Corp. (NASDAQ:SPCT), the
leading manufacturer of ultra linear, high-power RF
amplification systems for wireless infrastructure
manufacturers and service providers, today announced
its new SC5000W single carrier power amplifier
subsystem for Wireless Local Loop (WLL) and wide
band digital data.

The system is currently in field trials in Asia and the U.S.
It is planned for commercial service applications
beginning the first half of 1999. Spectrian will be
demonstrating its SC5000W in Booth No. 1801 at PCS
'98, being held Sept. 23-25, 1998 in Orlando, Fla.

"Spectrian continues to lead the industry in delivering
power amplifiers for the latest emerging wireless network
technologies," said Garrett A. Garrettson, president and
chief executive officer at Spectrian. "This system
incorporates several new features discovered during our
field trial process to improve the product's installation
and maintenance capabilities. "

WLL is essentially a replacement network for traditional
wireline twisted copper pair connections. Such fixed
primary connections are used for voice and data access
between the user and the PSTN (Public Switch
Telephone Network). Industry observers predict that in
the not too distant future subscribers will have the
ability to access the PSTN from their fixed location
(home or place of business) via handsets/terminals and
connect through the airwaves to the PSTN's wireless
base station. One such base station could provide
access for hundreds of subscribers.

This instant connectivity will be a benefit to millions
who are either in low teledensity areas of the world or are
on long waiting lists for landline based communications.
The last "300 yards" via wireless will save operators and
users the cost, complexity, and disruption of excavating
streets just to provide access to voice or Internet/data
services.

Industry watchers predict that the number of subscribers
served by WLL systems will grow from approximately 10
million at the end of 1998 to approximately 32 million by
the year 2001. Spectrian began its first commercial
deployment for WLL to Korea in early 1998 into a
standardized system based on Wide band CDMA
technology.

Spectrian's SC5000W platform is designed for wide band
CDMA WLL networks operating from 2.37GHz to
2.4GHz. The 19 inch rack mountable product family
spans several different configurations. Two power
configurations, 20W and 40W, are available in either
standalone, omni, or multi-sector architectures. The
system includes new features of automatic hot standby
RF power switching and forward and reverse power
sampling ports.

Customers will be utilizing the WLL network primarily for
commercial wireless applications to integrate voice and
data, including ISDN capabilities. Data transport rates
over the WLL network are expected to approach 2Mbps.

Spectrian is the leading independent supplier of ultra
linear, high power RF power amplifiers to wireless
communications infrastructure manufacturers and
service providers worldwide. As an ISO-9001 quality
system-certified company, Spectrian designs and
manufactures power amplifiers for use in microcell and
macrocell base stations for cellular, PCS and wireless
local loop networks. Spectrian is located at 350 West
Java Drive, Sunnyvale, Calif., 94089. For more
