Bearcat,

You raise a very important issue here.

RTEC's strategy is based on the assumption that there are lot's of people who will transition only slowly to the new UltraSparc platform.
Due to the transition costs beyond the cost of the system.

As I understand it software, written to run on Sparc platforms using the current operating systems, won't run under the new operating system unless rewritten.

Is this true?
I find this hard to believe. So maybe I am misunderstanding something here.

But if so then in addition to the cost of a new machine, you have to factor in all the other upgrade costs.

Also my own experience is that I run on a PC, as my mainstay programs, ones that were popular 6-8 years ago.

Many of these are no longer upgraded or even supported.

If I am right about the above, people in such a situation the Sparc world would have to transition to completely new applications.
That is a major effort. Learning new programs. Data translations.
Etc.

Add to that lots of custom programs and you are talking about additional potential major costs in moving up.
