The story of Jack Rains is a cautionary tale. He was (is) a very sharp, very successful technical analysis speculator/investor who posted frequently on SI. Jack was one of the few to explain in excruciating detail and plain language what he would do and why on a given day BEFORE the day began. Predictably, he was literally hounded off these pages by a jihad of criticism that questioned his motives, methods, integrity, judgement, intelligence and anything else that came to mind. He simply decided one day that he didn't need this grief and withdrew from posting on these pages. His treatment was merely a prototype of the sniping and vicious attacks that pop up occasionally on this and other SI threads.
Losing Jack Rains was a serious blow to the information and fun of being on SI. I read (and sometimes post on) SI because I get great insights (and share my thoughts) about the stocks I follow closely. Though personal attacks are sometimes couched in amusing and biting sarcasm, ultimately there is a kind of Gresham's law at work on SI. Bad (hyper-critical, personal, invective-laden, pit-bull) posters drive out good posters. I learned more about technical analysis from Jack's posts than any other source. I have read (via a few of the old-timers with whom he is still in contact) that he is thriving without posting on SI.
