<I wonder if the Java spreadsheets have security problems.>

The java spreadsheets don't even have security - compiling of sheet generated code, protection of custom coding via an interapplication language (like MSFT's VBA), file level passwords, worksheet passwords and workbook passwords. Do you now see how far they have to go? The biggest problem with Excel was that you could decompile the .xla files and you were able to break the password protection on worksheets and workbooks with the appropriate hacking software. The new version allows even Visual Basic developers to offer everything as a .DLL, which takes a LOT more expertise to decompile.
