Interface Systems and Solimar Systems to Cross-license Datastream Management Software; Combined AFP and Xerox Capability To Help Users Maintain Investment in Legacy Systems
ANN ARBOR, Mich., Aug. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Interface Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: INTF - news), announced today an agreement to cross-license datastream management software with Solimar Systems, Inc. of San Diego, Calif. Under the terms of the agreement, each company will market the other's complementary products: Interface's software for converting AFP and SCS data and Solimar's software for converting Xerox Metacode (DJDE) data. These dual print conversion capabilities will enable both companies to offer complete datastream management to over 95% of corporate users, who have traditionally used one or the other formats -- and sometimes both -- in the same office at once.
Interface also announced its Document Server product, which will combine both AFP and Xerox datastream management on one software platform (Windows NT). Document Server is currently in Beta testing and is due for release in November. Document Server will automatically determine which output device is the destination -- fax, e-mail, view or print -- and then convert and route the appropriate data to that device.
''Until this agreement, corporations who wanted to unify datastreams onto one platform have had no single vendor to turn to,'' says Bob Granger, Interface's vice president for Marketing. ''It was either AFP or Xerox and the rest was up to you. Yet the need to unify datastreams has never been stronger.''
The agreement, Granger adds, will bring together the two market leaders in their respective datastream segments.
Drew Sprague, president and CEO of Solimar, praises the organizational fit between the two companies. ''Technology evolves very rapidly. Cooperation leverages the best skill sets available in the marketplace.''
Granger points out that the movement to unify around an interchangeable datastream is driven by a growing desire on the part of customers to configure data in multiple ways -- formats such as hard copy, e-mail, facsimile transmissions, and even Internet files converted to PDF for easy viewing. ''The rise of the Internet as the center of business communications means that customers increasingly want and need to handle their data with much more front office versatility,'' Granger explains. ''That puts greater pressure on the back office to produce simple, uniform, easy-to-manage datastreams.''
At the same time, he notes, the wave of corporate mergers is forcing many IS managers to integrate highly disparate systems in a hurry. ''The need to handle multiple datastreams well has suddenly gone from being a luxury to a necessity,'' he says.
