China Warns Foreign Companies About Interfering In VCD Business 08/14/98 Xinhua English Newswire (Copyright 1998)
The deputy secretary-general of the China Electronic Audio Industry Association in Shanghai, Jin Zhenglong, has warned foreign firms about trying to apply their standards for digital disc products and interfering in Chinese state sovereignty.
Some international companies and local manufacturers have their own standards for digital disc products, Jin said, and are ignoring government warnings about trying to dominate the fledgling industry in China.
Some foreign companies have said China needs to get their approval for video compact disc products, or that the term " VCD " cannot be used by Chinese companies, or have attempted to keep China from developing its own technical standards.
Foreign companies should not try to take control of China's digital disc industry by using their technological and financial muscle to force Chinese firms to adopt their standards, Jin said, and added that, "We like to introduce advanced foreign technology, but don't want to attach ourselves to any foreign company."
China has approximately 380 manufacturers of VCD players that made more than 10 million players last year. In 1996, China worked out technical standards for VCD products and last year began to draw up technical standards for SVCD products. When these take effect, they will apply to all VCD and SVCD products on the Chinese market. |
