Uhhh...
I have el cheapo scanner... Mustek 1200
It plugs into the parallel port... no need for a SCSI
My Wacom tablet and mouse plug into my serial ports.
I guess I have more of a computer background than you do.
I started on Commodores all the way up to Amigas. Heck I even sold Morrow computers for awhile...even ATARI!! I knew PCs before Windows came out. Switching to a MAC was easy too...just more expensive.
I don't even use a Zip drive, I have a HP CD-writer plus, and just burn CDs..650mb!! You can get CD-R disks for a song, and sometimes free with rebates! :-)
Yes, I understand that most graphics people aren't tech support people. I am just fortunate. Since the early 80s I was involved in computer repair(my first husband owned a computer repair company)..I even learned stuff like aligning Commodore 1541 drives, and could repair the entire line of Panasonic printers(laser too).(Gads, looking back now I feel old, though I'm only in my mid-30s!!!!)
How I stayed with technical stuff is beyond me... it must be because my brothers are involved in it...my older brother is hardware support for Harley Davidson, and my younger brother tech support for a large bank chain.
So I think that hardware these days is definately NOT more complicated, its the NETWORKING. Hardware is just board swap out now. It used to be component level repair. Now it is subassembly swapout.
I understand that you do not want to deal with the technical mess, you don't get paid for it. Anyways, Microtek scanners are way overpriced, what does it go up to? 600 dpi? ;-)
Right now our two networked together computers are truly workhorses...I use them for music applications, art applications, desktop publishing as well as basic word processsing, etc.
My husband is an engineer, and he uses it for programming as well as CAD applications.
I'm waiting for Windows NT 5 for I change from Win 98. The Beta versions are improving every week.
Yeah, yeah, eventually I will wait to get the MAC when the newer faster one comes out.
But right now on the Graphics newslist, the designers there are talking about upgrading or even buying the iMac.
They are talking about what type of paint they can spray on it to make it look better.
Go fig.....

Annette

right now, I don't have a problem. I can go either way(oooh, kinky...AC/DC)
