The only oil and gas companies that i own right now and in fact recently purchased are stone energy which is a good medium sized gas producer in the gulf.it has a good track record.a friend of mine who is a drilling engineer knows one of the drilling engineers at stone.its a great buy at 29$ or below and a sell at the 35-38$ level.its currently around 26$.with a cold winter gas should go up and so should stone.also own ocean energy they have a great track record of finding oil,i personally know some of the principals and one of my colleagues is in a duck camp with some of the ocean people .its quite leveraged right now but has a great track record compared to other medium sized companies like chesapeake and belco.also a great buy right now.also own some exxon as part of the foolish four strategy, and a couple of oil service stocks recently bought like global industries and unifab.
as for epic a long time ago i owned some arakis see board on si ,its a very speculative soudan oil play with lots of reserves to be brought to market in about a year.arakis has been unable to raise money to fund its portion of the jv expenditures for drilling in the soudan despite having great rerserves of oil and exceelnt success rate.its had to sell out. it just goes to show how hard it is right now for a semi established copany with established reserves to raise money to fund exploration in the current climate so really dont hold out much for epics chances in the current environment.arh
