The difference between those people and Clinton is that Clinton is so arrogant that he has an affair while he knows he is under investigation. He has shown a recklessness that is downright scary. The affairs that you describe were rumored during Presidencies, but never actually known, partly because the media didn't go after the truth, and partly because the people involved were discreet. Clinton doesn't feel he needs to be discreet because he is so powerful.
The anger that you see is America's reaction to being treated as if we are stupid, or that Clinton feels he is better than us. He lied to us, over and over again. When we found out Nixon lied, we dumped him. When we found out LBJ lied (after he was no longer President), we villified him, especially over the lies related to Vietnam. JFK is no longer looked at as the king of Camelot, since his foibles have been revealed. The same applies to the others. The only exception is the one President (Harrison?) that was a bachelor while President. When a woman told him her child was his, he accepted all financial responsibility and never questioned her veracity, even though there was no way she could have proven the child was his. He took responsibility for his actions. Clinton did not.
He works for us, and the boss doesn't like being lied to or talked down to. Clinton never admitted to having sex during his speech, never apologized, never actually accepted responsibility for anything. All he showed us was more weasel words. It's not about affairs or sex, it's about abuse of power, lying and arrogance. |
