GARTNERGROUP'S DATAQUEST SAYS LATIN AMERICAN PC MARKET SHOWS

SIGNS OF RECOVERY IN 2ND QUARTER

Business Editors/Technology Writers

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 19, 1998--

Latin American personal computer shipments reached 871,770 units in the second quarter of 1998, up 9 percent from the second quarter of 1997, as the region was supported by renewed growth in Brazil, according to Dataquest Inc., a unit of Gartner Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:GART).

Brazil had posted negative growth the past two quarters, but in the second quarter of 1998 shipments increased 5.9 percent over the same period last year.

"In addition to shrinking factory revenue, the leading vendors are experiencing new and difficult challenges in the region," said Luis Anavitarte, senior industry analyst for Dataquest's Personal Computer Quarterly Statistics Latin America program.

"The top tier vendors are facing growing pressure from the clone vendors. Enhanced face-to-face service, dramatically lower prices, and fast technological adoption are makingclones flourish in the region, as the consumer feels increasingly comfortable purchasing non-branded machines."

Compaq continues to lead the industry with its market share remaining above 17 percent (see Table 1). Sequentially, IBM's performance increased, Anavitarte said, while Hewlett-Packard's market share gain continued partially at the expense of IBM. -0- *T Table 1 Latin American PC Vendor Unit Shipment Estimates for Second Quarter 1998 (Actual Units)

The region benefited from increased shipments in the mobile market, which grew three times faster than the desktop market. "Better communications infrastructure, lower prices, and a more dynamic business culture are pushing notebook sales, which experienced 28 percent growth in the second quarter of this year," said Anavitarte.

The region's top growing countries were Argentina which grew 13.8 percent, and Mexico which grew 10 percent in the second quarter of this year.
