Great opportunity for Cisco to pick off Ascend engineers!
I wonder how LU will deal with the generous ASND options. I wonder how LU employees will feel working side by side with former ASND employees who have buko amounts of options. Integrating two companies on opposite coasts with different values, different culture, no chemistry whatsoever will definitely slow down both LU and ASND. The internal politics alone will cause great dislocation, project cancellations, differential treatment of former Ascend/Cascade employees, etc. Mory and the executive staff cash out with millions. Cisco builds a campus in Alameda, and the rank-and-file engineers line up across the street resume in hand. I for one think ASND is better off going alone. Ascend is a new world company. Why would it want to merge with the Mabellsaurus old world complete with union workers threatening to strike. I highly doubt that engineers will want to do strike duty, and this will also push them into Cisco's arms. Questions: does Lucent provide free sodas? does Lucent grant every employee (including non-management) stock options?
