Penni, I haven't read Joseph Campbell, and I'm certainly not brilliant... The real question I'm asking (bringing us back to the topic I just can't seem to avoid) is whether the moral impact of the heroic quest requires the hierarchies and edifices of organized religion. Couldn't we just chant old stories around the campfire and get the same effect, without needing priests, pastors, mullahs, etc.? The transition between 15 and 17 is not necessarily wrong. I pity anyone who has not passed the stage of heroic dreams of life-or-death struggle. I also pity those who embark on adult life before passing that stage. Having been one of them, I know what they're in for. On Tolkien, if I'd tried it after the early teens, I probably couldn't have gotten through it either. You really have to be about 13 and male. Then it's a whole new world, and a somewhat more appealing one than ours. Steve
