Hello NW,

Further to Asia/Pacific, I received some interesting figures
on Middle East Mediterranean & Africa outlooks for CPQ.

Market consists of:
1. GCC (U.A.E., Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Yemen)
2. Saudi Arabia
3. Turkey
4. Egypt
5. New Markets (N+W Africa, CIS Countries, Lebanon,
Jordan, Palestine, Malta)

Total 1998 market value is estimated to be in the region of
$2.5 Billion. IDC expects CPQ to close around 11.5% of this
market, placing them in a clear leadership role. 1997 was
$1.8 so a growth figure of 38% is expected. These figures
are from IDC using extrapolated Q2 YTD figures.

Leadership by units shipped for 1997 in some of the countries
is as follows:-

Country CPQ% 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th
U.A.E. 20.31% CPQ Acer AST IBM DELL
Saudi Arabia 12.49% CPQ DELL Acer IBM AST
Turkey 4.66% HWP Escort IBM KOC CPQ
Egypt 4.79% IBM CPQ AAPL DTK Challenger
New Markets 6.20% IBM CPQ HWP DELL Other

Makes for some interesting reading. Some of the issues facing
growth in these areas are the diverse nature of business in
each area, an extreme and common bargaining mentality, different
product mix, different languages etcetera.

Not a huge part of Compaq's business, but nice to note for
interest's sake.
