Sorry to offend, especially at a time when the spinmeisters are coming through with such wonderful euphemisms for current reality. But that is largely the point. It's like Hemingway's observation in his tome about the bullfight pageant, Death in the Afternoon. At some point pads were put on the flanks of the horses that took the charges of the bulls in the preliminary stuff before the toreador took over. The pads did not reduce the injury or pain of the horses nor the frequency of their dying or having to be sacrificed after their duty in the ring. It did protect American, and other, tourists from having to see the brutal wounds and attendant blood. The difficulty of dealing with that had been cutting into the tourist attendance at the bullfights. That was enough to bring on the flank pads which were purely cosmetic. That's the way it still goes.

If Hemingway published it now, no doubt it would be Expiration in the Afternoon and would be released on the Friday afternoon of a triple witching day. But, I dare say, it wouldn't be the same.

At any rate, it would be my great honor to make it up to you two by treating you to a couple of stiff shots of Jack Daniels at any opportunity.
