<<Im really surprised Lane actually responded to Berst.>>

Nevertheless, factual replies that counter mindless muckraking are welcome anytime, anywhere. Oracle didn't get where it is today by suffering fools gracefully, and a little combative instinct -- supported by a big stick -- can go a long way towards more responsible journalism. To a certain whining element out there, it has become fashionable to depict Larry Ellison's advocacy of his long-time architectural vision as "Bill bashing". If you've followed the guy's technology calls for a decade or more, you'll readily admit that he waxes hyperbolic now and then and relishes nothing so much as pie-ing his enemies, but he does this in the same spirit that any hard competitor does. Scratch beneath the badinage though, and the guy has been right more often than not. Ray Lane earns a point in my book for stepping up here, even if he's trouncing a gnat.
